How the Pawty Started

Jenna & Snickers started a meetup group in June 2006 for NYC Shiba Inus and their Human Companions. Within six months, the group had grown to over 150 members and was meeting one to two times per month with turnouts of 20 to 40 people.

Jenna began to feel a great responsibility to amuse these members. (Shibas are quite easily bored.) While trying to think up a new and interesting idea for a meetup, she mused "Wouldn't it be nice if we could meet for drinks one night and take our dogs?" This idea bounced aimlessly about in Jenna's head for a week or two until one day she decided to make exactly that happen. On February 9, 2007, Jenna sent an email to Animal Haven... "The Shiba Meetup group wants to host a Canine Cocktail Hour at Animal Haven sometime in March - preferably a Tuesday evening," and the snowball officially started rolling downhill.

Soon thereafter, Jenna realized she had created a monster and recruited a few members from the meetup group to help organize the event. Raffle items were donated, plastic martini glasses were purchased, emails were sent, other meetup groups started to post the event on their message boards, a writer got in touch about doing a piece for Time Out, promo photos were taken, and a website was assembled. Tickets sold like mad and the "Pawty" was so much fun that we immediately decided to do it again. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a NYC canine tradition.
